Description
This course examines the development of nineteenth-century poetry and drama. The evolution of theatre from the drame romantique to the théâtre fin-de-siècle will be studied through selected works of such authors as Hugo, Musset, and Rostand. Poetry will include a selection from the romantic, parnassian, and symbolist schools (e.g. Desbordes-Valmore, Gautier, Baudelaire). Students will be introduced to basic techniques of textual appreciation and commentary.
