Description
This course examines the political, social, cultural, and economic dimensions of the early Ottoman state from its inception at the beginning of the fourteenth century until the early eighteenth century. It presents the rich heritage of the Empire and its expansion to Europe, Asia and Africa, highlighting issues such as the origins of the Empire, imperial expansion, conflicts with European powers, the slave-based army, ordinary Ottoman lives, the complex bureaucracy of the state and the mysteries of the harem world. This course is twinned with HIST-2127 on the later Ottoman Empire from the eighteenth to the twentieth century.
