Description

This course is an introductory study of the chemistry and structural identification of common aliphatic and aromatic organic compounds. Topics include the structure, nomenclature, synthesis and reactions of aromatic hydrocarbons, phenols, aldehydes, ketones, enolates, carboxylic acids, sulfur- and phosphorus-containing compounds, and free-radicals. Spectroscopic instrumentation for structure determination is discussed, with an emphasis on infra-red (IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry (MS). The laboratory includes an introduction to techniques commonly used in organic chemistry, through the preparation, purification and characterization of compounds.
