Description
The focus of this course is the body, not in its biological sense but in its social sense: the body as a social construction. Every society within a given historical period develops specific meanings for the forms, functions, and movements of the body. This course examines the human body from a number of different perspectives and studies the body as a site of social interaction. This course surveys the history of thinking about the body, the body as a reflection of society and theories of corporeal representation.
