Description
This course introduces the problem of method in Religious Studies, especially as it relates to the study and interpretation of religious texts. Texts are examined from the perspective of various possible hermeneutical interpretations, taking into account literary, contextual, and historical concerns, as well as doctrinal and ideological considerations. Students consider both traditional religious and post-traditional ways of interpreting texts, gaining appreciation for how historical and ideological forces shape the interpretation of religious texts. Along with REL-5001(3), this course fulfills the method and theory requirement for the Joint Master Program in Religion.
