Fundamentalisms in Global Context

Description

Fundamentalism is one of the most prominent religious phenomena in contemporary cultures and around the world. This course will explore a variety of so-called "fundamentalist" religious movements in contemporary Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. What do these groups have in common, and what distinguishes them from each other? It will also consider how appropriate the term "fundamentalist" is for understanding these groups and individuals and what the implications of this "fundamentalist" label are for them. Several "fundamentalist" religious movements will be discussed in order to understand their relationship with "modernity" and "pluralism", the two traditions to which fundamentalists seem to be responding.
