Description
The meaning of the Bible is seldom self-evident. It has been interpreted in different and sometimes contradictory ways by various faith communities, within both Judaism and Christianity, who look to the Bible as an authoritative religious guide. The course seeks to explain why the Bible has been interpreted differently by various religious groups living in different times and places. It does so by introducing students to modern biblical scholarship, which sees the Bible against the background of the historical, political, cultural and intellectual contexts in which the biblical texts were written and interpreted.
