Description
This course examines the involvement of the central nervous system in the control of human movement. Various parts of the nervous system, such as the cerebral cortex, basal ganglia, cerebellum, brainstem, and spinal cord are explored. Specific topics of study include reflexes and voluntary movements, locomotion and postural control, visual and somatosensory processing, and neural plasticity. Examples from various movement pathologies are used to help explain sensorimotor control in the intact brain. Students obtain a fundamental understanding of how different structures in the nervous system are involved in sensory processing and in the control of human movement.
