Description
In this course, students are introduced to Indigenous peoples in what has come to be known as Canada and undertake a survey of Indigenous cultural, political, economic, and spiritual situations from pre-contact to the present. Students examine colonialism in Canada (past and present) and its ongoing effects upon First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples. Topics include Indigenous world views, fur trade, treaties, Indian Act, residential schools and the child welfare system, as well as historic and contemporary Indigenous governance and sovereignty. Students are empowered to engage in meaningful dialogue about issues that affect Indigenous and non- Indigenous people in Canada.
