Description
This senior seminar deals with the history of ideas about humankind in the early modern period, c. 1450-1650. Through readings of primary and secondary sources, students examine the theoretical frameworks in the early modern period used in the classification of human beings, especially in reference to sexuality, race, and gender, with links made to other social constructs of differentiation, including socio-economic rank or station, and religion. This seminar explores these ideas in the context of early overseas colonization.
