Description
This seminar course uses the concepts of frontiers and borderlands to analyze relations between indigenous peoples and expanding empires in world history. After a discussion of the historiography of frontiers and borderlands, students apply these concepts to Ancient Rome, China, the Eurasian steppe, South Africa, the Americas, and Australia. Students pay considerable attention to the creation and persistence of borderlands in North America. Finally, the course discusses the many ways in which frontiers and borderlands are presented in literature, art, film, and public history.
