Description
This course introduces the development of abstraction and expression in art from 1900 to 2000, particularly the relation of artistic movements to the political and historical context. The roles of war, sexuality, money, and the cult of personality in the production and reception of art are addressed within a framework of critical analysis, including formalism, Marxism, the feminist critique, and post-modern deconstruction. A wide range of media is explored including the arts of film, dance, sculpture, painting, and architecture.
