Description
This course seeks to answer historical, cultural, and ideological questions about Canadian documentary film from its beginning to 1970. We explore how NFB films have created and reflected the complex and unstable notion of Canada as a unified nation, focusing upon issues of representation. Historically, the dominant perception of documentary film is that they teach us about the 'real' world by documenting truth transparently. This course considers documentary as a form of representation and, as such, trouble its relationship to the 'objective reality' it seeks to represent.
