Description
This lecture/seminar course examines the history of the Province of Manitoba from 1870 to the present. Key topics include the Red River Resistance and the Manitoba Act, treaties with the First Nations people, settler-colonialism, federal-provincial relations, social reform movements, minority language rights, education, agriculture, resource extraction, hydroelectric development, and the growth of the provincial state. Special emphasis is placed on relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, and the importance of water in the province's history as it relates to politics, agriculture, urban growth, and energy.
