Description
This course considers how Mennonites from around the world have related to the environment in the 20th century, a time of immense technological change in agriculture and horticulture, with an emphasis on their relationship to nature and food production as farmers. It considers the way farmers have imagined their environments, and strategies they have taken to cultivate lands in distinctively different climates. Students study how Mennonite ideas on non-violence, simplicity and community, related to land and nature. Case studies may include Bolivia, Canada, Indonesia, the Netherlands, Russia, the US, and Zimbabwe.
