Description
This course is a global history of slavery and indentured labour from 1700 to the present; focusing on sexuality and gender. The course compares transatlantic African slavery and Indian indentured labour migration and their implications. Topics include gender and slavery in African societies, sex and the slave trade, African enslavement in the Caribbean and North America , abolitionist discourses , gender in the Indian indentured labour system in the Caribbean, Mauritius, South Africa , Malaya and Fiji, gendered approaches to peasant labour in India, the end of indenture and the historical implications of slavery and indenture today.
