Description

This course traces Indigenous history since the War of 1812. Beginning with the post-War period, the course examines the shifting policies and attempts by colonial governments to direct the assimilation of Indigenous people. Topics include the development of civilization and assimilation policies, origin and continuance of treaties, land claims, residential schools, Indian Act development, reservations, royal commissions, the 1969 White Paper, and recent court decisions. Emphasis is placed on Indigenous efforts to maintain cultural and national self-determination while facing these policies. We consider the diverse sources and methods for interpreting this history.
