History of the Byzantine Empire

Description

This survey course examines the history of the Byzantine Empire, from its origins in the reign of Constantine I to its end at the fall of Constantinople (1453). The course focuses on various aspects of political, religious, social, and cultural life. Topics may include the reign of Justinian I, the iconoclastic crisis, the transmission of the orthodox faith to the Slavs, the Byzantine court and its relations with its neighbours, notably the crusaders, and the Ottoman conquest.
