Description
This course is dedicated to the study of theatre history from antiquity to the seventeenth century. With emphasis on a range of historical, geographical, and cultural contexts, from Ancient Greece and Rome, to classical Chinese, Indian, and Japanese theatre, to theatre in the context of imperialist European conquest, students are invited to: track developments in acting, scenography, playwriting, and theatre architecture; engage with diverse critical approaches to the study of theatre history; and think critically about what theatre means in different historical and cultural contexts, asking, "Who and what is represented on stage? By and for whom? For what purpose(s)?"
