Description
This course examines the history of racial ideas and policies and how they have shaped world history from the Middle Ages to the present. Students analyze the development of racial ideas and policies in the Western World (Europe and the Americas), and manifestations of non-Western racial ideas. Topics may include the Crusades, Anti-Judaism, Anti-Semitism, European imperialism and colonialism, race mixing in Latin America, scientific racism, the Jim Crow system in the American South, the racial state of Nazi Germany, and the apartheid era in South Africa.
