Description
This course uses German feature films to help students develop their language skills and learn about the culture and history of German-speaking Europe since the 1920s. With the support of subtitles or captioning, guided exercises, and interpretive discussions, students develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills while becoming more familiar with German experiences in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Some attention is given to German film terminology and the analysis of scenes. The course includes notable films by such directors as Joseph von Sternberg, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Volker Schlöndorff, and Fatih Akin.
