Description
This course investigates some of the changing concepts of tragedy and comedy in seventeenth-century and eighteenth-century French drama. Plays by the famous dramatists such as Molière, Racine, Marivaux, Voltaire and Beaumarchais are examined in light of major texts on the aesthetics of theatre, written by theorists such as Aristotle, Corneille, l'abbé d'Aubignac and Diderot. Class discussion includes a table ronde format.
