Description
This course explores women's writing in French in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. By reading Colette, de Beauvoir, Sarraute, Darrieussecq, Dupré and Djebar, alongside critical texts (Perrot, Butler, Braidotti), students examine how women's lives and writing have changed across a century and a half. How do stories shape our understanding of gender roles? How do they reveal stereotypes about femininity, masculinity, gender, sexuality and ethnicity? We reflect on the role of women's writing in reshaping sexual and racial identities, and how the representation of gendered and racialized experiences in women's literature challenge the patriarchal/colonial discourses.
