Description
This course offers students focused study in a particular aspect of English theatre in the early modern period (ca. 1485-1660). In any given year, the course may be organized around a particular genre (revenge tragedy, city comedy), form (closet drama, masque, university plays), or playwright (Ben Jonson, Margaret Cavendish, John Ford), for example. Through this study, students are introduced to some of the genres and tropes of early modern plays and to the social and economic status of plays and playgoing in early modern English culture. This course may be repeated once when the topic varies.
