Description
Students learn about the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Human rights legislation is connected to ways in which racial bias and other forms of discrimination occur in early childhood settings. Oppression, bias, privilege, power, and microaggression in the field of early childhood including those experienced by educators are identified. Approaches to early years learning that amplify children's voice and agentic capabilities are explored, considering Western perspectives and Indigenous ways of knowing.

Students may not hold credit for this course and DEV-3600 if the topic was research on children's play and learning.
