Description
Students in this seminar "travel" to Kyoto and its sacred sites, temples, shrines, and landmarks through a cultural study in and around Japan's ancient capital. Using virtual and textual resources, learners explore Kyoto through maps, illustrations, gazetteers, literature, and other media to understand how the city has evolved over the past 1,200 years. Students draw knowledge from earlier Japanese culture courses to participate in discussions based on their engagement with virtual visits and texts centered on Kyoto's sacred and secular spots. In class discussions and debates are bolstered by background readings from Japanese (in translation) and non-Japanese sources.
Requisite courses
EALC-2708 or EALC-2720 or EALC-2721 or EALC-2727 or GEOG-1105 or GEOG-1102 [prerequisite(s)].
Restrictions
Students who took REL 3722 or GEOG 3722 would not be eligible to take EALC 3722 and vice versa.
