Description
This course introduces students to East Asian culture in modern times. It surveys the transformation of traditional cultural values as a result of intense political and cultural influence from the West since the late 19th century, and explores the roots of contemporary culture in China, Japan, and Korea. Particular attention is given to the impact of literature (primarily short stories and novels by early 20th-century intellectuals) and Western thought on the East Asian region (e.g., social Darwinism, liberalism, science, and democracy, introduced to East Asia during the late 19th century), and on the way in which traditional values are being critically re-evaluated as China, Japan, and Korea have endeavored to modernize their societies.
