Magic and Divination in the Greek and Roman World

Description

Students are introduced to the issues surrounding unofficial, and sometimes unsanctioned, religious practices in ancient Greece and Rome. The modern problem of defining the term magic in contrast to religion, science, and philosophy in antiquity is considered as ancient examples of purportedly magical activity are discussed. Particular attention is given to social and political contexts in which such activity is identified. The history of legislation against such acts is also addressed.
