Description
This survey examines the history of Europe from the gradual collapse of the Western Roman Empire up to the emergence of states in Western Europe. The course focuses on various aspects of social, religious, political, cultural and intellectual life. Topics may include the "barbarian" invasions of the Roman Empire, the birth of Christianity and Islam, the rule of Justinian, the establishment of medieval kingdoms, the rise and fall of the Carolingian Empire, as well as Magyar and Viking invasions. Medieval documents are analyzed in class to offer a direct insight into the period.
